Trail Notes / Current Conditions:

Jun 13 2019 - Due to varying weather conditions, the deactivated FSR from Deep Creek Rd. is in rough shape and is not suitable for cars and SUV's. Short box trucks and lifted vehicles with high clearance might be fine.  There are numerous trail issues including eroded tread and poor signage.

2020 - FSR #825 (from Foothills Rd. near cemetery to the Saddle trailhead) is gated and closed to public access.

Trail Description:

The West Peak hike can be accessed from the same trailhead as the East Peak hike. Instead of taking the steep climb to the East peak, follow motorized trails leading north around the East Peak to join with the old Saddle trailhead. At the Saddle, you'll see a marked trailhead for the West Peak Trail to the right of the outhouse. From here, hike about 30-45 min to the first viewpoint. Watch for ATV use on this section of trail that was widened as a firebreak during the 1998 fire. A single-track foot trail continues west from the first viewpoint along the cliff edge to a second lookout offering views both north and south.

From the second viewpoint, return the way you came or create an additional loop by following a rough trail southeast, staying right at the junction with an ATV track, and then meeting the Forest Service Road.  From here, turn left and follow the road back up to the Saddle trailhead.  The additional loop will take up to 2 hours from the Saddle trailhead.

To reach the Mount Ida North Trailhead: (Allow 0.5 hours from Salmon Arm) Drive 10km south of Hwy 1 on Hwy 97B to Deep Creek Rd. Follow Deep Creek Rd for approx. 4 km to the Forest Service Rd just before property at #496 (watch for children and be respectful of the residence). Follow the steep logging road up and then right onto North Ida Forest Rd. Continue for 5.5 km, staying on the main road, then park at the small road exiting on the right. Walk (or 4wd drive) this road for approx. 1.3 km and watch for the trailhead on the left. A small parking area is located on the right. NO motorized use allowed on trail. WARNING this is a decommissioned FSRoad with significant water barring. Don't attempt with a low clearance vehicle, 4x4 recommended.

NOTE: Forest Service Road #825, which was a main access to the "saddle" trailhead for south access to the Kela7scen East Peak trail (entrance near Mt. Ida cemetery) is now closed and gated and can no longer be accessed by the public.

Access Map: Via Deep Creek

Caution! West Peak Trail From Saddle - This area was subject to fires in 2003 and 1998. Both trails are prone to excessive blow down along the ridge. Pets must be controlled.

There are many motorized trails from the area of the North trailhead. To avoid getting lost, bring a map or go with someone familiar with the area.
