An intermediate 6 km out and back hike to the Mt Baldy Lookout, with an additional 1.7 km loop option. A favourite destination for generations, the trail features creek crossings, a scenic boardwalk, many minor lookouts, and sweeping views of Copper Island and Shuswap Lake. The trail traverses interior Douglas Fir hillsides, loops around an ecologically sensitive mature trembling aspen stand, and follows rocky outcrops. This is sensitive wildlife habitat. Trail users are asked to stay to the trail to avoid erosion in this vulnerable ecosystem.
In 2023, the Bush Creek East wildfire burned through the area, destroying sections of the trail system. With support from the Province of British Columbia's Disaster Financial Assistance program, the trail was restored, including the reconstruction of the winding boardwalk using timber salvaged from the burn area. Today, the trail offers a unique opportunity to witness a variety of fire effects and the forest's natural recovery.
West of Sorrento on Hwy 1, turn left (south) onto Elson Rd. Continue over the railway track, then turn left on South Shore Place and park in the cul-de-sac at the trailhead sign. Be sure to allow plenty of room for others to turn around and avoid blocking driveways.
