Explore drier south facing Interior Douglas fir forests at the newest authorized, signed, and maintained trail system born out of collaboration between local property owners, cattle range licensees, motorized and non-motorized recreational leadership, CSRD Parks, Shuswap Trail Alliance, and Recreation Sites and Trails BC. The trailhead and trail system has been planned in consultation with Secwépemc, Syilx/Okanagan, agriculture, forestry, hydro, and transportation managers. A multi-use trailhead staging area (underway by CSRD Parks) for motorized and non-motorized recreational users features toilet facilities, picnic benches, information signage and maps, plus dedicated ORV loading and a novice ORV play area plus signed access routes up into the Kelly Mtn area. Hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrian trail users are directed to a series of established non-motorized trail loops south of the trailhead staging area. A dedicated non-motorized equestrian trail up into the Kelly Mountain area helps to manage ORV/equestrian access in and out of the trailhead. The area is monitored for compliance by a working group of local residents, range licensees, and motorized and non-motorized recreational user groups.
North of Hwy 97 off Salmon River Rd, take Yankee Flats Rd west at the junction with Heywood Armstrong Rd, then turn left (south) off the second switchback onto McTavish Rd. At approx. 750 m turn right (north) up the FSR to the multi-use trailhead staging area approx. 200 m on your right (north side of the FSR).
